The Wonderful People of Isla

Still slacking here as far as the blogging is going, but I'm determined to post another day while I'm still here. Instead of doing a post for each day, however, I've decided to do it by subject. As I'm sure you all know, the days kind of run into one another when you're on Isla, and if you don't take serious notes, it just becomes a blur after awhile.

So, I'm dedicating this post to the people of Isla...the natives...the folks who make it so special to all us gringos and gringas. They tolerate arrogant and/or stupid tourists and many go out of their way to make us comfortable on THEIR island. Even when I was staying in the Colonias, I was always greeted with a warm smile and a cheerful "hola!" Many are hard working people with little pay, and yet everyone seems happy. I think they could teach us all a few things about life.

The street vendors who stand in the heat all day hoping to make a sale...

I'm not sure what these guys on the bikes do, but they're out there as well...

Some we recognize more than others...

The performers at Minino's...
The loncheria workers who cook meal after meal in the heat, yet it's done with tender loving care...

This beautiful lady is at Tacotumbras next to the market...

The waiters who literally 'run' down to the customers by the water, digging holes for umbrellas and toting fancy drinks to make them happy...and ALWAYS with a smile...

This is Jorge, my waiter at Picus one evening. Business was slow so he sat with me, trying to get me to speak as much Spanish as I could...

And of course, there's Romi. He makes the world's best Margaritas in my humble opinion, and I can't imagine not making a stop there on every visit to Isla.

Then there are the hard working fishermen...one of the reasons the restaurants are so great on Isla.

I always love seeing the senior citizens of the island. Imagine all the changes they've seen in their lifetimes.

Families...

Miscellaneous...

But my favorite are the children.

I've saved the best for last. This handsome little guy was running around in the square all dolled up for some special occasion. When he saw that I was taking his picture and he kept running towards me and I couldn't get him to stop for a close-up, so I just shot anyway...

...and got this. What a face, huh?

What great shots. You walked right by my apartment. The older gentleman with the cane sitting in the chair is my neighbor!! He sits there every day all day. He watches his grandchildren play in the street.

What a great photo journal! I was shocked by how many people I recognized. By face if not by name. (the one picture in the family grouping is NOT a family, trust me on that one!)

It's funny how familiar you become with the faces on Isla. I know I've taken numerous shots of a lot of the same people there. Wayne, I think I know which shot you're talking about. I didn't know those people, so I just bunched it in that group.

Now that I'm home, I will be organizing photos and posting a few more subjects.

Thanks for the comments!
