I wish it would rain...

Texas weather sucks. No rain, ever...and temps over 100 degrees every single damn day. If it does rain, it lasts for about five minutes. It really makes me wonder why I moved here. Everything is scrubby brown. You walk a couple of blocks and you feel like you've walked about 100 blocks because of the heat. You walk from your house to the car...car to work...work to car...and back to the house because it's too damned hot to spend any amount of time outside. Your seat belt becomes a branding iron. Every day I wake up hoping I'll see some rain clouds...but nothing but blue skies and blazing temps. They say that people who live in climates that get a lot of rain get depressed. But I think it's equally true about people who live in climates where it never rains. I miss those midwestern thunderboomers where the crack of thunder is so loud you can feel it in your chest...or the days where it would just drizzle all day which makes you want to cuddle up with a book. I guess it's all about a little variety...and there's no variety in Texas. Every single day is exactly the same. Sometimes I think that one day Texas is just going to explode into a fireball because of the incredible heat with no rain.

I was watering my flowers tonight...which I do every single day otherwise they would die...and I noticed this beauty.

My yellow hibiscus doesn't bloom nearly as much as my red one does. So when the yellow one makes its appearance, I am always amazed by its perfection. Believe me, the water on the petals is not from rain...it's from my daily watering to keep it alive.

I watched a video recently about how the world is running out of fresh water. Places become so dry that when it does rain, the ground can't absorb the water so it just runs off back into the rivers and ocean...which negatively affects the whole ecosystem. That is definitely the case in Texas. Private individuals and companies are slowly purchasing water rights around the world which are going to affect each and every one of us some day. Water will probably eventually become as expensive as gas...if not more.

Okay...I'll get off my soap box. For now, I just wish it would rain.

I could have written this post! Welcome to Phoenix in the summer. I get through it because I know this too shall pass in another month or two. We went to Bisbee, AZ last week just so we could see and hear a good lightning storm. It was amazing! We opened the old sash windows in the hotel and just listened to it. I just went outside for my nightly swim and came back in pronto. It's blowing dust! No clouds or rain in sight, but I get tremendous headaches from the blowing dirt. I call it the nuclear summer. All that being said, I think this Phoenix summer has actually been cooler than the other summers sinced we've lived here. By cooler I mean 105 or 109 instead of 118!

I'm surprised there isn't a watering ban ...Even we haven't had much rain this summer. I don't water ( not that great a well) so my gardens aren't doing that good. Half the veggies I planted haven't had anything growing til about now.

Beck - It's fortunate you have a rainy season to look forward to. There's no light at the end of the tunnel here. They predict this to last at least through the rest of the year.

Ann - There IS a watering ban. I just keep my potted flowers watered...nothing else.

MD - Lucky you! No rain down here...sunny skies with the high around 102 today.
