Stop and smell the flowers...

One thing I'll have to say about Texas is that it has some very pretty wildflowers. I was driving back home from New Braunfels this afternoon and had to stop by the highway and take some pictures. We've had a lot of rain lately, so the fields are just full of them. I was going to look up all the names, but decided it would take too much time, so I'll just let you enjoy them without knowing what they are.

I do know these are Bluebonnets...the state flower.

One thing I DON'T like about Texas, however, is the fire ants. I saw one of their hills while I was out. This one was about a foot wide. I always get a little enjoyment out of disturbing the little buggers.

If you're not familiar with fire ants, see the fuzzy brown edges of the cracks where I stepped on the hill? Those are thousands and thousands of tiny little ants scurrying all around. It's amazing what these little guys can do. You don't want to get bitten by one (or a lot)...it hurts and creates little red welts on your skin. I learned that real quick when I had my yard from hell.

Deb, those are absolutely stunning photos of the wildflowers! The fire ants are out big time now. I've made the mistake a few times of stopping in places where they swarm right up onto my feet and legs. OMG. So painful!

Beautiful! I actually saw one flower that I have in my yard! And I'm glad we don't have those ants up here...I'm sure we have some other bug to take it's place!

Pretty! The first one looks like what we call primrose here. It's pretty, but invasive. The fourth one may be Blue-eyed grass, and the fifth one is Indian Blanket (guillardia - not sure of spelling).

Thanks, Beck. Boy, don't I know about those fire ants. The first time I experienced them was when I was working in my yard from hell when I first moved to that house. They started crawling up my leg and I ran into the house and jumped in the shower. I was more careful after that.

Thanks, Ann...be glad you don't have fire ants.

Vee - I thought the first one was primrose, but I didn't want to say it and be wrong. And I kept thinking that red/yellow one was a Indian Paintbrush, but you're right about the Blanket. Thanks!
